Cavity Prevention ,

When it comes to cavity prevention the best person for the job is you. Choices you make on a daily basis are essential to keeping your mouth healthy and cavity free. As Benjamin Franklin once said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Doing simple actions routinely will help to ensure that your mouth does not fall victim to destruction and decay. The only catch is that you must actually do the simple actions – and that is entirely up to you.

Cavities are formed when bacteria inside the mouth produce acids that attack the tooth enamel and create holes in the teeth. These holes are called “cavities,” and they can lead to serious oral health issues and destruction. There are millions of bacteria living within your mouth on any given day. These bacteria start out helpful, assisting in the breakdown of food particles left behind after eating. However, when these bacteria are allowed to hang out inside the mouth for too long, they become destructive. As they are breaking down food particles they begin to produce acids to help with the process. These acids are destructive and begin to eat their way through the tooth enamel. When a hole is created in the tooth a cavity has been formed, making the tooth extremely susceptible to more devastating decay.

There are three simple steps that you can do to prevent cavities:

  1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Brushing helps to loosen up the bacteria from the teeth so that it is more easily rinsed away.
  2. Floss daily. Flossing is your number one defense against cavities. Floss removes bacteria-laden plaque from the gum line and from between the teeth where toothbrush bristles cannot reach.
  3. Visit the dentist for regular cleanings and dental exams.
