Four Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures that Make Great Smiles

Atlanta GA Cosmetic DentistryYour smile is a recognizable feature of who you are, and it leaves a lasting impression on those you encounter – whether it be day to day or on a chance meeting. Because your smile is an integral feature of your facial appearance, feeling confident in your smile has a great impact on others around you. If you are known for easily sharing your smile with others, people view you as friendly, confident, out-going, and as someone they are happy to be around. However, if your dissatisfaction with your smile keeps you from sharing it with others, people may often view you as standoffish, cold, unfriendly, and hard to please. Understanding how your smile affects not only your appearance, but also your relationships with others, can help you make the decision to seek out cosmetic dentistry procedures.

For years, many people associated a beautiful smile with Hollywood celebrities and the “elite” in society. However, today, there are options available to people in all areas of life who wish to enhance their smiles. Four cosmetic dentistry procedures that make great smiles are:

  • Teeth whitening
  • Dental veneers
  • White fillings
  • Six Month Smiles®

Teeth whitening is the most popular cosmetic procedure done in the United States, period. As a dental procedure, dentists have continued to see a rise in the number of patients who request this cosmetic dentistry procedure. Millions of Americans have had great success transforming their smiles by simply brightening and whitening their teeth. Even those whose teeth are not perfectly straight can achieve remarkable benefits from teeth whitening. A bright, white smile is a clean smile that is healthy in appearance; attracting others to your presence. For most people, teeth whitening is a simple cosmetic dentistry procedure that is inexpensive and quick.

Dental veneers are another option for dramatically improving the appearance of your smile. Dental veneers are very thin porcelain shells that are permanently bonded to the existing surface of the front of the teeth in order to restore or improve the tooth’s appearance. Most people are good candidates as long as there is enough tooth enamel available to bond the veneers to. Dental veneers are used to close gaps in the front teeth and hide flaws such as chipped or broken teeth, malformed teeth, and stained or discolored teeth. Porcelain dental veneers are a permanent solution that can completely transform the entire appearance of a person’s smile, or that can be used to treat a single tooth so that it matches the other natural teeth.

White fillings, also known as composite fillings, are tooth colored fillings used to restore cavities and decayed teeth. White fillings provide an ideal solution for those who need to have a cavity filled within their front teeth. As these teeth are the most noticeable, using white fillings helps to hid dental work. Aside from simply filling new cavities so that they are not noticeable inside the mouth, many people are choosing to replace their old, amalgam fillings. Amalgam fillings are made from liquid mercury, powdered silver, tin, and copper. Many people believe that they suffer poor health from having these amalgam fillings inside their mouths for extended periods of time; thus, they are replacing them with white fillings.

Six Month Smiles® are braces for adults that focus major improvements on the front teeth. Traditional braces can take between two to three years to complete their transformation of a person’s smile. That means that adults have to suffer through that length of time wearing metal brackets and wires on their teeth that make it obvious that you are undergoing orthodontic treatment and the constant requirement for adjustments and visits to the dentist. With Six Month Smiles® dental patients are able to achieve a beautifully straight smile that they are proud to show off to those around them.

At Pure Dental Health, we offer cosmetic dentistry procedures at competitive prices. The health and satisfaction of our patients are our highest priorities. We accept most forms of dental insurance and offer extended hours to allow working professionals time to visit our office before or after a traditional work schedule. We also proudly offer financing and payment options for patients whose dental insurance does not cover the cosmetic procedure that they wish to have done. Please contact our office today.

This Holiday Season, Give Yourself the Gift of a Beautiful Smile

If so, maybe you should consider giving yourself the gift of a beautiful smile this holiday season.

With today’s advanced cosmetic dentistry techniques and procedures, it is possible for virtually everyone to have a beautiful and balanced smile. Teeth whitening, bonding, porcelain veneers, orthodontics and dental implants are just some of the restorative and/or cosmetic dentistry procedures that can be used to improve the appearance of your smile and your overall appearance. After all, your smile is the first thing that people notice about you and can leave a lasting impression. This can effect your confidence in every social interaction you have whether it is dating, presenting at work or just sitting around the table and sharing a meal with others.

You don’t have to continue to hide behind your smile. But maybe you are worried about the cost. While improving the appearance of your smile is a worthwhile investment, it can be expensive. Enamel Shaping and Bonding for an Improved Smile

Do have one tooth that is a little more square than another?  Do you have a rough spot on one of your teeth or a small chip in your tooth?  If so, you may be a good candidate for a painless cosmetic dental procedure called enamel shaping.  With enamel shaping, dentists use the same tools that are used to polish the teeth during a dental cleaning to remove a small amount of the tooth’s surface. This quick procedure can create an improved look and better feel.  Typically, enamel shaping is done without an anesthetic.  This may not be the case in patients with severe tooth sensitivity.

Dental bonding is another painless cosmetic dental procedure that is basically the opposite of enamel shaping. With dental bonding, a small amount of composite resin material is added to the tooth to fill in holes, cracks or gaps in the teeth.  Once the dental bonding material has hardened, it is polished to smooth the surface.

Enamel shaping and dental bonding are relatively inexpensive cosmetic dental procedures that can be used to improve your smile.  These procedures are appropriate when one or two of your teeth is in need of improvement.  If you wish to improve all of or a majority of the teeth that show when you smile, porcelain veneers may be a better option. This is also the case when there is severe tooth discoloration in multiple teeth.  With porcelain veneers, extremely thin shells are laminated to the front surfaces of the teeth to improve their appearance and bring balance to your smile.  Porcelain veneers are a highly effective way to dramatically improve the appearance of your smile but are quite a bit more expensive than bonding or enamel shaping.

If you are interested in improving the appearance of your smile but are not sure which type of cosmetic dental procedure to choose, talk to a qualified cosmetic dentist today.  After a thorough consultation, your dentist can recommend the procedure or combination of procedure that best suits your goals while staying within your budget.

Am I a Candidate for Clear Braces?

Each year, many adults throughout the United States decide to straighten their teeth using clear braces. This is not surprising because your smile is extremely important as it affects every social interaction you have with others.  Whether it is a date, a job interview, a business meeting, a presentation, or just getting together with friends and family, your smile has a big impact on your confidence level and your self-esteem.  Unfortunately, your smile and your overall appearance can also significantly affect the way you are treated by others.  Fortunately, advances in dental technology and orthodontics now make it possible for most adults to achieve a straighter more beautiful smile, without putting up with the time and hassle associated with traditional metal braces.

If you are an adult, there are a variety of orthodontic solutions that are available to help you achieve straighter teeth without significantly altering your appearance in the process.  Invisalign® invisible braces and Six Month Smiles® are two different types of orthodontic treatments that can be used to help adults improve the appearance of their smiles. The Invisalign® system utilizes a series of custom-made, clear aligners that can be worn over your teeth to gently move them into the desired position. Six Month Smiles® uses a patented set of Lucid-Lok® clear brackets and tooth colored wires as well as low forces to move your teeth into the desired position. Both of these options offer significant advantages over traditional metal braces, however, they are not suitable for every patient.

Both the Invisalign® system and Six Month Smiles® can be used for most patients with crooked or misaligned teeth.  However, if you are in need of major bite changes or have other dental health issues, you may not be a candidate for either of these options.  Only a qualified dentist can determine for sure whether or not these orthodontic solutions are right for you.  If you are interested in clear braces, the first step is to find a certified and experienced Invisalign® and/or Six Month Smiles® dentist in your local area.  Then, you and your dentist can decide together which option is best suited to help you meet your goals while at the same time fitting your lifestyle and your budget.

Tobacco and Your Teeth

Tobacco, whether it is smoked or chewed can have lasting negative effects on your oral health.  At best, it can cause severe tooth discoloration that is hard to treat.  At worst, it can cause oral cancer, an extremely aggressive and often deadly type of cancer that forms on the mouth or throat.  Smoking tobacco (cigarettes) can also make you more susceptible to periodontal (gum) disease and eventually tooth loss.

It can be very difficult to remove tobacco stains from your teeth using traditional methods of bleaching/teeth whitening such as over-the-counter treatments, professional take-home whitening kits (purchased from a dentist) and professional in-office whitening treatments.  Therefore, individuals with tobacco-stained teeth are many times forced to consider more expensive options such as bonding and porcelain veneers.

The facts related to oral cancer are very sobering. According to statistics posted on the Oral Cancer Foundation website, “close to 43,250 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year.  It will cause over 8,000 deaths, killing roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day. Of those 43,250 newly diagnosed individuals, only slightly more than half will be alive in 5 years. (Approximately 57%) This is a number which has not significantly improved in decades.” This highlights the importance of getting regular oral cancer screenings from your dentist.  Most dentists will screen for oral cancer on a regular basis.  If you smoke, your dentist may recommend more frequent oral cancers screenings for you.  Early detection is one of the best ways to fight this serious disease.

Both current and former smokers have an increased risk for developing periodontal disease and are at risk for developing more severe periodontal disease than people who have never smoked.  This is because smoking causes systemic immuno-suppression and impairment of soft tissue and bone cell function.  If you are a current smoker or you smoked in the past, it is vitally important for you to get regular dental checkups so your dentist can check for signs of periodontal disease such as red, swollen or bleeding gums and gums that are receding.  This will enable your dentist to detect and treat gum disease when it is in the earlier stages.  Early detection and treatment will help to prevent the tooth and bone loss that can occur with late-stage, untreated periodontal disease.

If you are a current smoker and are concerned about your dental health, schedule an appointment with your dentist today.  If you would like to quit smoking or using tobacco products, it is a good idea to talk to your physician.  Your doctor can help you find the resources you need to break this habit.

Putting Your Best Smile Forward

What is the first thing that you notice about a person when you meet them for the first time? For most of us, the answer is their smile. The truth is, your smile makes a big first impression and often a lasting impression on those who you meet. A healthy, bright smile can make a great first impression and let others know that you take good care of yourself.  It can also enhance your confidence.  This can have important implications for many facets of your life including your career, your dating life, your social life and more. So how can we make sure that we put our best smile forward everyday?

The first part of making sure that your smile is the best that it can be is to take care of your oral health. Brushing your teeth thoroughly at least two times per day and flossing your teeth thoroughly at least one time per day can go a long way in ensuring that your smile looks healthy and bright. So can regular trips to the dentist for dental cleanings and examinations.

However, even with the best oral hygiene and dental care, there may be some aspects of your smile that you are not happy with. A space between your two front teeth, dingy, yellowed teeth, crooked teeth, missing teeth and teeth that are too long or too short can all make you feel self-conscious about your smile. This can cause you to feel less confident in general. Luckily, with today’s advances in dental technology and cosmetic dentistry, you don’t have to feel embarrassed about your smile. Teeth whitening, clear braces, porcelain veneers, dental bonding and dental implants are all cosmetic dental procedures that can be used to bring balance to your smile and improve its appearance.

If you are currently unhappy with the appearance of your smile, the first step is to schedule a consultation with an experienced and qualified cosmetic dentist. After a thorough evaluation and discussion about your desires, your dentist can recommend the most appropriate cosmetic dental procedure or group of cosmetic dental procedures to help you achieve your goals. This will help you to put your best smile forward wherever you go!

Gapped Teeth: To Fix or Not to Fix

What do Michael Strayhan, Madonna, Dennis Leary, David Letterman, Lauren Hutton and Anna Paquin have in common?  They all have prominent gaps between their front teeth.  For these celebrities,  gapped teeth have become part of their persona and as such, they have elected not to fix them.  While these celebrities are able to pull off this look without a hitch, it is a little more tricky for the average Joe.  That is why many individuals elect to fix their gapped teeth with cosmetic dentistry.

If you have a gap in the middle of your two front teeth, their are a variety of cosmetic dental treatments that can be used to close the gap thereby adding balance to your smile.  Your dentist can determine the best method for you based on your lifestyle, budget and overall dental health.

The first option that can be used to close a gap in between the two front teeth is orthodontics.  Traditional metal braces, clear braces and short-term braces are all options that may be considered.  The second option is a process called dental bonding.  Dental bonding requires very little advanced preparation.  The process involves applying a tooth-colored resin material that is made of durable plastic to the surface of a tooth and then hardening it with a special light.  In most cases, dental bonding can be completed in one dental visit lasting just a few hours. Porcelain veneers are another cosmetic dental solution that can be used to hide a gap in the middle of the front teeth.  Porcelain veneers are extremely thin shells that can be laminated to the front surface of the teeth to change their appearance.  Like dental bonding, porcelain veneers require very little advanced preparation.  They do, however, require a fabrication process that is done in a dental laboratory.

If a gap in between your front teeth is making you feel self-conscious about your smile or is making you dislike the way you look, talk to a cosmetic dentist in your local area today.  After a thorough evaluation, your dentist can recommend the best cosmetic dental solution to help you achieve a more beautiful and balanced smile.

5 Reasons to Whiten Your Teeth

Teeth Whitening is now the most requested cosmetic dental treatment.  This is not surprising since this single cosmetic dental treatment can dramatically improve your appearance, your self-confidence and even your quality of life.  There are a number of reasons why individuals decide to whiten their teeth including the following:

1.  to whiten teeth that have become stained due to smoking or consuming foods and beverages such as coffee, tea, soda, berries and red wine

2.  to treat the discoloration that occurs as a natural part of the aging process

3.  to prepare for an important event such as a wedding, reunion, anniversary or job interview

4.  to prepare to start dating again after a divorce or the loss of a spouse or partner

5.  as a complement to other cosmetic treatments such as Botox, facial fillers or plastic surgery

The bottom line is that whitening your teeth can greatly enhance and take years off of your appearance.  It can also increase your confidence which makes you more attractive to others.  This can be important if you are looking to start dating, have an important event coming up or are interviewing for a job.

When you do decide to whiten your teeth, there are many options from which to choose.  There are a variety of over-the-counter whitening products that can be used to whiten your teeth, however, they differ widely in their effectiveness and some can even be harmful to your dental health.  For this reason, the American Dental Association recommends whitening your teeth under the supervision of a dentist.  Most dentists offer two options for teeth whitening:  take-home kits and in-office treatments.  The take-home kits produce gradual results and can be used over and over again, as needed.  The in-office procedure produces dramatic results in a single appointment lasting for a little over an hour.  Both of these methods have certain advantages and disadvantages.  Your dentist can help you determine which method is better suited for you based on your lifestyle, your budget and your dental health.

If dingy discolored teeth are causing you to lose confidence and are negatively affecting your quality of life, talk to your dentist today about whitening your teeth.  Enjoy your whiter, brighter, more beautiful smile!

Types of Dental Fillings

There are a variety of different types of materials that can be used to fill cavities in the teeth including the following:

• gold

• silver amalgam

• composite

• ceramic

• glass ionomers

Some types of fillings are better suited for certain conditions.  When trying to decide which type of filling is best suited for you, you need to weigh the following factors:  location of cavity, severity of decay, cost and insurance coverage.  Your dentist is the best person to help you decide which type of dental filling best suits your needs.

Gold fillings are very sturdy, non-corrosive and can last up to 15 years, with proper care.  However, they are much more expensive than silver amalgam fillings and require more than one dental visit to be fitted correctly.  Silver amalgam fillings are also very strong and sturdy, however many individuals do not find them to be aesthetically pleasing.  In addition, they are more likely to expand and contract and to cause a tooth crack as compared to other types of fillings.  In addition, many individuals worry about the long-term safety of silver amalgam fillings since they contain Mercury: a known neurotoxin.  Composite fillings are an attractive option because they can be made to closely match the color of your teeth.  However, composite fillings are not as durable as silver amalgam fillings and are more expensive.  Ceramic fillings are made of porcelain and are also a very aesthetically pleasing option.  They are also very durable.  However, ceramic fillings cost more than silver amalgam fillings and can wear the opposing teeth if the porcelain becomes rough.  Glass ionomers (acrylic fillings) often last for less than five years but are a good choice for children if their teeth are changing.  They can also release fluoride which helps to prevent tooth decay.

For addition information about the different types of dental fillings or to determine which type of dental fillings is best suited to your needs, talk to your dentist today.
