Tooth Loss in the Georgia

Despite advances in dental technology and improved access to education regarding oral hygiene, tooth loss remains a problem for many people in the United States.  So how does the state of Georgia compare to other states when it comes to tooth loss?  According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention,  Georgia is ranked #9 when it comes to tooth loss as defined as the percentage of adults aged sixty-five or older who have had all of their teeth extracted.  This may sound like a good ranking, but it is not.  This means that the percentage of people over the age of 65 who have lost their teeth (28.2%) is higher than all but eight other states in the country.  So, which state ranked the worst?  That would be West Virginia (42.8%) followed by Kentucky (38.1%) and Tennessee (32.2%).  You may be wondering which state has the lowest percentage of adults over the age of sixty-five who has had all of their teeth extracted.  The answer is Connecticut.  Connecticut is ranked lowest among all the states in the United States when it comes to tooth loss.  Their percentage of adults over the age of sixty-five who have had all of their teeth extracted is just 12.4%.

Experts cite a higher education level and better access to dental care as two of the biggest reasons for Connecticut’s low rate of tooth loss.  So what can we learn from the residents of Connecticut when it comes to avoiding tooth loss?  We can learn that brushing your teeth at least two times daily and flossing at least one time daily can really go a long way in protecting your dental health and preserving your teeth for many years to come.  We can also learn that visiting the dentist regularly for routine dental cleanings and exams is essential to safeguarding your long-term dental health. By visiting your dentist regularly, you can increase the chances of finding and treating any dental health issues such as dental carries and gum disease in their earliest stages, before they threaten the health of your teeth.

Even with the best of oral hygiene and dental care, tooth loss can still occur.  The good news is that there are now a wide variety of effective options for replacing missing teeth.  Many advanced dental practices, including Pure Dental Health in Atlanta, are now offering dental implants.  Dental implants provide a long-term solution to missing teeth that provides for replacement teeth that look, feel and function like natural teeth.  If you are interested in dental implants to replace one, several or all of your teeth, please call Pure Dental Health to schedule an appointment.

Smokeless Tobacco and Your Risk For Oral Cancer

If you are currently using smokeless tobacco, you are putting your oral health and your overall health at risk. Smokeless tobacco is one of the leading causes of oral cancers: very aggressive cancers that form in the mouth and throat.  If not detected early and aggressively treated, these forms of cancers are associated with very high mortality rates.

The most common signs and symptoms of mouth cancers include the following:

•  persistent cough

•  hoarseness or changes in your voice

•  difficulty swallowing

•  ear pain

•  lump or sore in your mouth or throat that does not heal

•  weight loss

If you are experiencing these symptoms, you should notify your physician immediately so he or she can examine your mouth and throat and run the necessary tests to properly diagnose your condition.

To aid in the early detection of oral cancers, most dentists are now performing oral cancers screenings as a part of a routine dental examination.  If you are receiving routine dental examinations every six-months, you should be receiving the screenings you need to detect oral cancer in its earliest stages.  Early detection and treatment is currently the best defense we have against this serious and potentially deadly disease.  If you have not been to a dentist for a routine dental examination in more than six months, it is time to schedule that appointment.

You can also decrease your risk for oral cancers by quitting smoking or using smokeless tobacco products.  If you are currently using tobacco in any form, talk to your doctor today about a healthy strategy for quitting.

Composite Resin Fillings: A Great Alternative to Amalgam Fillings

Dental amalgam is a mixture of metals consisting of liquid Mercury and a powdered alloy composed of silver, tin and copper that is used to fill cavities caused by tooth decay.  It has been used for more than 150 years in hundreds of millions of patients because it is extremely durable and is less expensive than other types of materials.  However, since approximately 50% of dental amalgam is elemental Mercury by weight, some experts are concerned about the negative effects of Mercury exposure on patients’ health.  Additionally, many patients desire restorations that are more natural in appearance.

For these reasons, composite resin fillings provide a good alternative to amalgam fillings.  Composite resin fillings are often referred to as “natural colored” or “tooth colored” fillings because they are white and can be customized to match the color of surrounding teeth.  This is a major advantage over amalgam fillings since they can be made to closely blend in with your natural teeth.  Another advantage is the fact that they require minimal removal of healthy tooth structure for placement.  Perhaps most importantly, composite resin fillings do not contain Mercury. The only negatives to composite resin fillings are the fact that they are not quite as durable as amalgam fillings and are more expensive.

Your dentist can help you decide on the best type of dental restoration to suit your specific needs.  If you are in need of a dental filling and desire a restoration that is more natural and appearance and does not contain Mercury, schedule an appointment with your dentist today to find out if a composite resin filling is right for you.

Foods to Eat/Avoid For Whiter Teeth

Teeth whitening is currently the most requested cosmetic dental procedure in the United States.  That is because whiter teeth result in a brighter, more beautiful smile.  Having your teeth professionally whitened can take years off of your appearance and make your smile appear more healthy and more attractive.

There are a variety of foods that you can eat to help you achieve whiter teeth and a more beautiful smile.  These foods include apples, fresh green beans, cauliflower, carrots, celery, strawberries, oranges, cheese and other dairy products.  Foods you should avoid if you desire whiter teeth include the obvious choices including tea, coffee, blueberries, soy sauce, red wine and sodas.  There are also some that you would not expect including white wine and sports drinks.

Even if you avoid the foods and beverages that are most likely to stain your teeth, your teeth will naturally become more yellowed with age.  Smoking or using other tobacco products can also cause severe tooth discoloration.  Fortunately, advances in cosmetic dentistry including teeth whitening now make it possible for virtually everyone to have a bright, white, beautiful smile.  Your options for tooth whitening include in-office procedures as well as take-home kits.  Your best solution for tooth whitening will depend on the cause and severity of your tooth discoloration as well as your lifestyle and your budget.

Pure Dental Health in Midtown Atlanta is pleased to offer expert teeth whitening services to the residents of the Greater Atlanta Metropolitan area.  If you are interested in achieving a whiter, brighter, more beautiful smile, please call our office today to get more information about our Whitening For Life program.

Looking For A Smart Way To Pay For Routine Dental Healthcare?

We all know how important it is to take care of your teeth.  That is why it is vitally important to visit your dentist for routine dental healthcare.  It is recommended that most people visit the dentist every six months for a dental cleaning and examination.  If you have issues with your dental health such as periodontal disease or tooth decay, you may need to visit your dentist more frequently.  The point is: visiting the dentist is an expected cost that you can budget for each year.  A health cash plan offers a smart way to pay for expected healthcare costs such as routine dental cleanings and checkups.

A health cash plan is different from a private health insurance plan in that it provides a way for you to pay for the costs of everyday, expected healthcare expenses such as routine dental healthcare and visits to the optician.  It is not used in place of a private health insurance plan but as a complement to private health insurance.  A health cash plan deals exclusively with expected costs, not unexpected treatments or illnesses.

The main benefit of a health cash plan is the fact that it is flexible and allows you to alter your policy to suit your individual needs.  It is also really easy for you to add other family members to your policy.  Some health plans even provide additional benefits like gym discounts, at no extra charge.

If you are looking for a smart way to pay for routine dental healthcare and other expected healthcare expenses, go to to get more information about a health cash plan.

How To Care For Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain Veneers are an advanced cosmetic dental procedure that can be used to give you a more balanced, brighter and more beautiful smile.  They can be used to improve the appearance of teeth that are gapped, unevenly spaced, misaligned, crooked, discolored or otherwise unattractive.  The process involves laminating extremely-thin, custom shells made of porcelain to the front surfaces of your teeth to improve their appearance.  With porcelain veneers, you can achieve the million dollar smile you have always dreamed about, without the time and hassle involved in other treatments such as traditional metal braces.

Porcelain veneers do represent a significant investment and since they are a cosmetic dental procedure, they are not covered by most dental insurance plans.  If you have invested in porcelain veneers, it is important to care for them properly to protect your investment and to enable them to last as long as possible.  With proper care, a set of porcelain veneers will last between ten and fifteen years.

If you have porcelain veneers, it is important to floss your teeth at least one time daily and to brush your teeth thoroughly at least twice daily.  You may also want to brush after meals, especially if you have eaten foods that are more likely to stain your teeth (red wine, coffee, tea, red sauces, berries, etc.).  You may also want to rinse with a mouthwash daily.  If you do enjoy beverages such as coffee, tea and red wine, drinking them through a straw will decrease your chances of staining your porcelain veneers.  Since porcelain veneers are more fragile than natural teeth, you will want to avoid chewing ice or eating hard candies.  It is also vitally important to visit your dentist every six months for regular dental cleanings and exams.

To find out if you are a candidate for porcelain veneers or to get more information about their care, please contact Pure Dental Health in Atlanta.  Pure Dental Health offers a full range of cosmetic dental services including porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, adult braces and more.
