Each year, many adults throughout the United States decide to straighten their teeth using clear braces. This is not surprising because your smile is extremely important as it affects every social interaction you have with others. Whether it is a date, a job interview, a business meeting, a presentation, or just getting together with friends and family, your smile has a big impact on your confidence level and your self-esteem. Unfortunately, your smile and your overall appearance can also significantly affect the way you are treated by others. Fortunately, advances in dental technology and orthodontics now make it possible for most adults to achieve a straighter more beautiful smile, without putting up with the time and hassle associated with traditional metal braces.
If you are an adult, there are a variety of orthodontic solutions that are available to help you achieve straighter teeth without significantly altering your appearance in the process. Invisalign® invisible braces and Six Month Smiles® are two different types of orthodontic treatments that can be used to help adults improve the appearance of their smiles. The Invisalign® system utilizes a series of custom-made, clear aligners that can be worn over your teeth to gently move them into the desired position. Six Month Smiles® uses a patented set of Lucid-Lok® clear brackets and tooth colored wires as well as low forces to move your teeth into the desired position. Both of these options offer significant advantages over traditional metal braces, however, they are not suitable for every patient.
Both the Invisalign® system and Six Month Smiles® can be used for most patients with crooked or misaligned teeth. However, if you are in need of major bite changes or have other dental health issues, you may not be a candidate for either of these options. Only a qualified dentist can determine for sure whether or not these orthodontic solutions are right for you. If you are interested in clear braces, the first step is to find a certified and experienced Invisalign® and/or Six Month Smiles® dentist in your local area. Then, you and your dentist can decide together which option is best suited to help you meet your goals while at the same time fitting your lifestyle and your budget.

We know that bite problems can negatively affect the appearance of your smile but did you know that a malocclusion or misaligned bite can also cause a variety of dental health problems? It is more than just a cosmetic problem. When your bite is not properly aligned, it can lead to problems with the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) which can lead to severe headaches, ear pain and more. A misaligned bite can also cause excess wear on your teeth, ultimately leading to tooth breakage and failure. In addition, when teeth are not properly aligned, they can be harder to clean. This leaves room for bacteria to get in and cause problems such as gum disease and tooth decay. So, what can be done about this serious problem?
There are a variety of treatments that can be used to treat a malocclusion or misaligned bite including night guards, tooth reshaping, orthodontics (braces and retainers), and tooth replacement or reconstruction. The first step is to visit your dentist so that he or she can correctly diagnose the problem with your bite and then recommend the most appropriate treatment.
In most cases, your dentist will perform a physical evaluation of your teeth and will also use dental x-rays to evaluate your bite. An underbite occurs when the lower teeth project beyond the upper teeth. An overbite occurs when the upper teeth severely overlap the lower teeth. A crossbite occurs when there is a lateral misalignment of the upper and lower arches of the teeth. Each of these types of malocclusions can cause serious dental health issues.
If you are experiencing symptoms such as dizziness, ear pain or chronic headaches, or, if you have noticed undo wear and tear on the surfaces of your teeth where the teeth of the upper and lower arch meet, you may have a malocclusion or bite problem. Schedule an appointment with your dentist today so he or she can correctly diagnose and treat the problem to protect your long-term dental health.

Are straighter teeth on your Christmas list this year? When you look in the mirror, do you picture yourself with a beautiful, more balanced and straighter smile? Have you always wanted to straighten your teeth but never had the time or the money? Don’t you wish it was as easy as just asking Santa? Even though it is not as easy as just putting it on your Christmas list, with the latest advances in dental technology and orthodontics, it has never been easier or more affordable for adults to straighten their teeth. And now, you don’t necessarily have to put up with a mouth full of metal in the process!
Today, there are a variety of attractive and affordable options to help adults get straighter teeth and more beautiful, confident smiles. Invisalign® invisible braces are a good option for adults who desire straighter teeth, but do not want to wear metal braces. The Invisalign® system uses a series of clear, custom aligners that are worn over the teeth to move them into place. The aligners can be removed while eating, flossing and brushing your teeth, for improved dental hygiene. Although each case will vary, treatment time is an average of one year. The cost of Invisalign® will also vary according to each individual case, however, the cost is an average of $5000, roughly the same amount as the cost of traditional braces. Invisalign® effectively corrects a wide variety of dental problems ranging from from mild cases of crooked or protruding teeth to more complex issues such as an overbite, underbite or serious malocclusion.
Six Month Smiles® is another good option for adults who are seeking straighter teeth. Like the Invisalign® system, Six Month Smiles® braces are also clear. However, Six Months Smiles® straighten teeth in an average treatment time of just six months, and they cost less than traditional braces and most clear aligner systems. Six Month Smiles® braces focus primarily on just the teeth that show in the front of your mouth when you smile. For this reason, they are not effective for patients who need major bite alterations.
How should you decide which system is right for you? The only way to find out for sure if you are a candidate for one of these types of adults braces is to talk to a certified Invisalign® and Six Month Smiles® provider. Dr. Justin Scott of Pure Dental Health in Atlanta is a certified provider for both of these adult orthodontic systems. If you would like to get more information about adult braces or to find out which system is right for you, please contact Pure Dental Health today.

It is almost Halloween, that time of year when little ghouls and goblins will roam the streets of neighborhoods all throughout the United States in search of the ultimate sugar high! Many of these kids will sport fake teeth that are crooked and missing as a part of their costumers. You know, the kind you had as a kid and put in to scare all of your friends and any nearby adults. Well, crooked and missing teeth are fine and good when they are part of a Halloween costume, however, for many, they are a part of everyday real life. In this case, crooked and missing teeth are not very much fun.
Crooked teeth can negatively affect your appearance, your self-esteem and your confidence. Missing teeth can also negatively affect the way that you feel about yourself and can cause serious dental health problems such as orthodontic relapse (shifting teeth) and periodontal disease. So if you have crooked or missing teeth, what are your options?
It used to be that traditional braces or porcelain veneers were the only available solutions for crooked teeth. For many adults, the time, expense and altered appearance associated with metal braces made them an unattractive solution. Porcelain veneers provided another option but was cost-prohibitive for many. Today, there are a variety of options available for adults who desire straighter teeth but do not want to put up with the time and expense involved with metal braces or porcelain veneers. Six Month Smiles® is a good example. Six Month Smiles® is a short-term orthodontic treatment that enables you to get straighter teeth and a more balanced smile in an average treatment time of just six months utilizing clear braces. If you desire straighter teeth and do not need major bite changes, this may be a good solution for you.
Now let’s talk about the options for replacing missing teeth. If you need to replace a single tooth or a few teeth, your options include a partial denture, a conventional bridge or a dental-implant supported crown or bridge . If you need to replace all of your teeth, your options include traditional full dentures (full plates), dental implant supported dentures or dental implant supported crowns. These options differ greatly in costs as well as advantages to the patient. Your dentist can help you determine which option is best suited for you based on your dental history, your lifestyle and your budget. The important thing is to replace the missing teeth, not which tooth replacement option you choose. Failure to replace a missing tooth or several missing teeth will put your overall dental health at risk and can negatively affect the health of your remaining teeth.
If crooked or missing teeth are a reality for you, talk to your dentist today about how you can improve both the form and function of your smile with restorative and cosmetic dentistry. Happy Halloween.

TMJD stands for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder: a chronic condition affecting the Temporomandibular (jaw) joint. This disorder is the most common form of oral or facial pain and currently affects over 100 million Americans. People with TMJD experience chronic symptoms including jaw pain, ear pain, dizziness, a clicking or popping noise in the jaw and headaches. Severe TMJD symptoms can cause sufferers to miss work and to experience a reduced quality of life.
Current treatments for TMJD include anti-inflammatory medications, night splints, orthodontic procedures, bite adjustment treatments and dental restorations. Often, physicians and dentists will work together to find a solution for treating the symptoms. However, even with these treatments, some individuals are not able to find relief. For this reason, there is much research being conducted on this disorder. A recent study published in the August issue of the journal Pain, detailed a study in mice conducted by researchers at Duke Medicine. In this study, the researchers we able to identify a protein, TRPV4, that is critical to TMJD pain. This newly identified protein could be a promising target for developing treatments for TMJD.
If you experience chronic ear pain, jaw pain, dizziness or other symptoms, you may be suffering from TMJD. It may be caused by a “bad bite” or misaligned jaw or by clenching or grinding your teeth at night, when you sleep. If your TMJD is caused by a bad bite, your dentist may recommend an orthodontic treatment or dental restorations to better align your jaw joint. If your symptoms are caused by clenching or grinding your teeth at night when you sleep, your dentist may recommend that you wear a night splint.
Don’t let the symptoms of TMJD negatively affect your quality of life. Visit your dentist today so he or she can help you get some relief from your symptoms and an improved quality of life.
